Congregation Snapshot: Rodman Street Missionary Baptist Church The Rodman Street Missionary Baptist Church has been a vibrant component of the East End landscape for more than a century. In October of 1885, the Reverend Willis Duvall became the first of only eight pastors to lead the congregation in its one hundred and twenty three year history. He was then followed by a succession of seven pastors: Reverend R.S. Gibson, Reverend Oliver S. Simms, Reverend F.W. Williams, Reverend S.A. Thurston, Reverend George L. Bowick, Reverend Delano R. Paige, and currently the Reverend Dr. Darryl T. Canady of Wilson, North Carolina. The mission of Rodman is to bring them in (Evangelism), build them up (Fellowship), grow them up (Discipleship) and send them out (Missions) while magnifying the Lord! It was upon this charge and foundation that the Rodman church outreach projects were established through the efforts of Pastor Delano R. Paige. Some of Rodman’s internal ministries include: Christian Education; Men’s Ministry; Marriage Ministry; Youth and Young Adult Ministry; Music Ministry; the Rodman Daycare; Missions; RASP; Healthy Hearts and Souls; Naomi’s Transitional Housing; and Dollars and Sense Ministries. As part of their external outreach partnerships, Rodman Street Missionary Baptist Church is an active member of East End Cooperative Ministry. This year, Rodman played host to EECM’s 26th Annual Martin Luther King Day Event, which was held on Sunday, January 17. The guest speaker was Minister DeNeice Welch, Pastor of the Bidwell Presbyterian Church. This 26th annual interfaith service celebrated EECM’s diverse supporting congregations while honoring the life and vision of Dr. King. The holidays are over, but EECM’s Gifts of Hope continue!
