Wells 4th Floor, Chicago, IL 60607 312.212.3717 | www.naswil.org ANDy tEItELMAN & CINDy BLuMENtHAL INtroDuCtIoN When NASW IL Executive Director Joel Rubin approached us about writing an article about the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) for the NASW Networker magazine, we were very pleased to have an opportunity to share information with our social work colleagues. It is particularly timely in this tenth anniversary year of the Plan for transformation (the Plan) with CHA engaging in numerous reflective activities as we prepare to move forward into the next decade. over the past several years, we have engaged in discussions with fellow social workers about CHA’s Plan for transformation. We have also been invited to speak each year to, and with students at, local schools of social work. From those conversations, a series of commonly asked questions has evolved which we will use as the framework for this article, sharing a combination of clarifying information and reflection on the challenges of addressing the social issues that the Plan is working to address. Social workers understand the importance of viewing the client within the context of their environment when planning and delivering social services. therefore, we’ve decided to provide an overview of the Plan that includes a macro view of the physical redevelopment, a survey of the choices afforded to residents for moving, and a review of the social services provided in conjunction with the Plan for transformation to CHA residents.
